Oswestry Community Action (OCA), formerly known as Helpmates, was launched in 1989 to meet the need for local care services. In 1992 we set up the first Dial-a-Ride in Shropshire and Oswestry Volunteer Bureau was launched the following year.
Since 1996 we have provided arts and health services to day centres and the community and established training partnerships with further and higher education establishments to provide open learning opportunities.
In 2002 we moved into new premises renamed Qube. The building was formerly an 18th century coaching inn and has been converted into a contemporary space housing the Shropshire's first purpose-built art gallery. Qube also contains an IT and media centre, an arts studio and office and conference space for Oswestry Community Action's community transport, training, care and voluntary services.
The design and refurbishment of Qube demonstrates our innovative and holistic approach towards creating an inclusive community. The conversion was informed by a comprehensive series of workshops and focus group meetings to ensure that all sections of the community had a say in how this public building would best serve them.
Qube today pioneers arts and health work within the West Midlands. Its IT and media centre contains a thriving learndirect and UK online resource making new technology and e-governance available to all. It is a hub for community services, arts and learning opportunities.
