My Giant Colouring Book
The etchings in My Giant Colouring Book, published by Paragon Press in 2004, seem to be seething with grotesque imagery, yet on inspection they are surprisingly innocuous; there is nothing here to offend an anxious parent or teacher. 19 of the 21 images are based loosely on join-the-dots drawings from children’s picture books, which were copied through photo-etching on to copper plates. These have triggered surrealistic interventions, improvised monstrous creatures, fantastic landscapes and macabre incidents, deviating wildly from the prescribed dot-to-dot formation. Dinos has said that they ‘are about how wrong you could make an image. How you could use nodal points and ignore them at the same time’.
Fowler+Sumner are new media artists based in Shrewsbury. They explore
ideas of fractured and layered narratives, and how creative technology can be
used and subverted into recording, generating, telling, retelling and distorting
narrative.
Fowler+Sumner are Arron Fowler and Martin Sumner. They are excited by the
creative potential of new communications and computing technologies, and in
other commissions they have explored the ways in which the growing prevalence of domestic media tools like mobile phones, mp3 players, digital cameras and
public web spaces can be best exploited in the creation of new narrative forms,
and the manipulation of traditional narrrative forms.
Fowler+Sumner work primarily with the moving image. Starting from linear works,
their interest in usurping and reinterpreting narrative has moved them into interactive
installation and performance pieces. This has included VJ work, which employs
motion graphics, archive video and live video feeds, mixed live to music. Rhythm
and movement are at the core of the art.
